About Me

Hi there!  My name is Mara and I want to thank you for stopping by my blog! I am fuelled by my love for beautiful places, people and things.  I am constantly looking for new ways to make my home more inviting, my food more delicious, my writing more intriguing and my life more beautiful.  I have lived in the US, France and am now residing in Britain.  The experience of integrating into different cultures has helped me develop into who I am today, and has certainly taught me a thing or two!  Sharing my wholehearted experiences, the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, I hope will entertain you and maybe even inspire some of you to take the leap and live a life abroad like you’ve always dreamed (hopefully having a better idea of what to expect than I first had!)  Of course, what is living abroad without traveling around?! Traveling is the perfect way to learn, experience and appreciate and I would love to share my experiences with you.

What Brings Me Here?

This is ultimately a love story.   I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, where I lived for 17 years.  I have always had a constant desire for art, adventure and culture.  At 17, my mother and I emigrated to France to an old farmhouse much in need of some TLC, where I lived for 2 years (and where she currently lives).  At 19 I moved to the UK to complete my Undergraduate and Masters degrees in Archaeology, Aegean Studies and Near Eastern Studies.  During this time I met the love of my life and we have been happily building our nest together for 4 years.  However, we have just moved and now have to start building the nest all over!

I had always dreamed of being an archaeologist or an actress.  After numerous childhood acting competitions in LA, I knew academia would always be needed in my life.  I have always been fascinated by culture and the power of man to constantly create.  We are creatures that strive for beauty in every aspects of our lives, looking for ways to create it and perfect it. It has been fascinating to study it!  This has led me to the path of a writer, hoping to spread my ideas, knowledge and experience with the world.

Alongside travel, fitness and a search for DELICIOUS fitness-friendly food is a big part of my life.  I am not a person who can go without delicious food and, well, it would just be down right selfish of me to not share my recipes with you!

Theatre is still a much loved part of me, one which I am fortunate enough to entertain with the occasional part in a play.  The first rule of integrating into a new culture?  Get involved with something you love!  But there will be more on that later… 🙂

Overall, this blog aims to inspire.  Be it getting down and dirty with some home DIY, trying a new recipe that will not only make you feel satisfied but that you can feel good about too, traveling to new places, giving a new hobby a go or perhaps even chasing a new lifestyle altogether, all beauty and creativity starts with inspiration.

  1. Hi Mara, I have enjoyed visiting your blog and reading about some of your travels and talents as a DIY decorator. You have some great fun ideas! We met when you came to Florida with your Mom and Tim. Hope you love your new home. Sue

  2. Hi Mara,
Caroline told me about your website and blog yesterday and I have been looking at it whilst drinking my coffee this morning. I’m really impressed and looking forward to finding out about future projects!
PS really like your up-cycled tables. Also have you thought about linking with Instagram to maybe find a wider audience?

    • Hi Judith! Thank you for the blog support. I’m so glad you like it! You should be able to find my Instagram in icon-form at the top of all my pages and posts, with a bigger follow-me icon at the bottom of my homepage 🙂 Unfortunately, the plug-in I use for social media icons that hovers with all of my pages and posts doesn’t have the Instagram icon! But the ‘plus’ button allows you to share it to any social media platform. Once again, thank you for the support and I hope you follow me on Instagram as well!
